He decides to go spend Christmas with his father and his rich girlfriend Natalie, but finds himself having to deal with his old nemesis Marv, his new wife/sidekick Vera , and an unlikely servant of Natalie working as their inside person.
The film was released in the United Kingdom on December 11, 1992, and topped the country's box office that weekend. The film is the third-highest-grossing film released in 1992 behind The Bodyguard and Aladdin. In the United States and Canada, it grossed more than The Bodyguard and ranked second. On March 15, 2012, ABC Family announced the development of the fifth installment in the Home Alone series.

Home Alone is primarily a coming-of-age story about an 8-year-old boy named Kevin McCallister . He is the youngest of five children who is frequently tormented by his older brothers and sisters. After events transpire between him and his family, he wishes that he had no family when his mother is punishing him for what he feels are unjustified reasons. She warns him to be careful what he wishes for and he ignores it. He wakes up the next day to discover that he is the only one left in the house. He thinks his wish came true and that he is finally alone without his obnoxious family.

On Christmas Day, Kevin is initially disappointed to find that his family is still gone, but Kate arrives home and they reconcile. The rest of the family then return after waiting in Paris until they could obtain a direct flight to Chicago. Kevin keeps silent about his encounter with Harry and Marv, although Peter finds Harry's knocked-out gold tooth. Kevin then watches Marley reuniting with his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.

In Polish, the movie is called Kevin sam w domu (meaning "Kevin home alone"). In Poland the film "Home Alone" became a phenomenon and part of the Christmas tradition.

Peter and the rest of the family stay in his brother's apartment in Paris, while Kate manages to get a flight back to Scranton, Pennsylvania. She tries to find a flight to Chicago, but all the flights are booked. Kate is overheard by Gus Polinski, the lead member of a traveling polka band, who offers to let her travel with them to Chicago in a moving van.
Michael Walsh of Nerdist noted the church scene as "One of the best, most touching scenes ". Home Alone was the number-one film at the box office for 12 consecutive weeks, from its release weekend of November 16–18, 1990 through the weekend of February 1–3, 1991. It was removed from the top spot when Sleeping with the Enemy opened with $13 million. It remained in the top ten until the weekend of April 26, well past Easter weekend.
The royal family is unable to attend the party because their flight was canceled, so Peter and Natalie decide to announce their engagement instead. Marv and Vera run back into the house and pursue Kevin, who accidentally ruins the party by running into the guests and knocking over an ice sculpture that turns out to be a frozen Mr. Prescott. Angered, Peter sends Kevin to his room, refusing to believe his story and accusing him of trying to sabotage his relationship with Natalie, who threatens to evict him if he misbehaves again. A series of in-universe films starring a man portraying a character named Johnny appears throughout the franchise. The films he performs in include Angels with Filthy Souls, Angels with Even Filithier Souls and Space Angels with the Filithiest Souls.
Still, Home Sweet Home Alone isn’t telling the exact same story as the original film. Disney has revealed that the villains of the new movie will actually be a married couple and that they infiltrate the Mercer home not just for a general robbery, but to steal a valuable family heirloom. It sounds like the Home Alonereboot will have plenty of opportunities for some thematic parallels between the Mercer’s and the intruding family, which could add an extra layer of narrative complexity to an otherwise familiar story. Thanks to Disney, those fans may finally be getting their Christmas wishes granted.
